Social
Science Composite Teaching Major
Introduction The Social Science Composite Teaching major is specifically designed for students planning to teach social studies at the secondary level. It provides sufficient course work to enable teachers to obtain a Utah basic certification in secondary education, with qualifications to teach in several subject areas.
The major consists of 40 credit hours in the Social Sciences, an additional statistics course, 24 credit hours in History, a Secondary Education Methods course, and two pedagogy courses. To obtain a Secondary Education Teaching License, students must contact the Secondary Education advisor at 585-9436 for information on admission and licensure coursework. A Secondary Education DARS report should also be generated based on the year the student was admitted to the University of Utah.
A minimum grade of "C" must be earned in each course counted toward the major.
The academic advisor for this major is Becky Murphy. Students interested in this major should contact her in the Dean’s Office (205 OSH) at 581-7579 or becky.murphy@csbs.utah.edu. Questions regarding specific courses in the participating departments should be directed to the appropriate department.
